The American Pirate Party Internet Relay Chat resides on irc://irc.freenode.net. Channels are listed below. IRC is a very simple chat client commonly used for discussing the development of open-source software projects, and is thus an acceptable medium for small-group communication, real-time updates, brainstorming, and general chatter within the party.

[edit] Connecting to chat

To connect and begin chatting simply point your browser to http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=theamericanpirateparty, enter a nickname, and click connect. Once you join, you will see the topic near the top, and just above that "Status" "#the..." tabs to navigate through PMs, other channels, and the line of communication to the IRC server.

Congratulations! You may now chat with fellow American Pirate Party members, YARRRRRR.

[edit] Communicating in real time

Be mindful, IRC is moderated. Channel operators (the users with the @ symbols preceding their nick on the right toolbar) may have discretion to remove you from the discussion if deemed fit. IRC is an important channel of communication, and we do not need a great many faces reducing the overall quality of discussion conducted inside.

Auto-complete focuses your response and reduces clutter. To directly address another user, type the first few letters of their name and the press tab.

To private message other APP users, type "/msg nickname the message here."

To change your nickname after you are connected, type "/nick name ".

[edit] IRC Etiquette

Remember that everyone here is a person deserving their own honest voice in party matters.

Don't hesitate to bring up your own points, but remember to respectfully address and acknowledge the points of others as valid when it is right to do so. IRC is not a bulletin board. IRC is not a social networking site. IRC is for speaking up, being heard, and getting involved.

[edit] IRC Policy Proposal

A document is currently being collaborated upon which will eventually become official IRC policy: Rules for Public Forum Moderation
